Marsa Alam is celebrated among scuba divers worldwide as Egypt's final pristine marine frontier. Unlike crowded northern resorts, the reefs here feature intact coral structures, exceptional 30-meter visibility, and frequent encounters with pelagic giants including oceanic whitetip sharks (Carcharhinus longimanus) and scalloped hammerheads.

1. Elphinstone Reef (Sha'ab Abu Hamra): The Oceanic Pinnacle

Located approximately 12 kilometers offshore from Marsa Abu Dabbab, Elphinstone is a standalone offshore reef cigar-shaped pinnacle rising from depths exceeding 100 meters. The North Plateau slopes down to 40 meters before plunging into the abyss, creating thrilling drift dives where current-swept soft corals thrive. Between October and December, curious oceanic whitetips patrol the shallow southern plateau near safety stops. Requirements: Advanced Open Water (AOWD) or minimum 30 logged dives due to strong oceanic currents.

2. Daedalus Reef (Abu Kizan): Remote Hammerhead Haven

Situated 80 kilometers out into the open Red Sea, Daedalus features a historic 19th-century lighthouse operated by the Egyptian Navy. Its sheer vertical walls plunge thousands of feet. Divers visit Daedalus on liveaboards to witness resident schools of scalloped hammerhead sharks congregating on the north point in morning blue water.

3. World-Class Shore Diving & House Reefs

You do not need an offshore liveaboard to enjoy phenomenal diving. Sites like Marsa Egla, Abu Dabbab Bay, and Ras Trombi offer sheltered bay shore entries where divers regularly encounter green sea turtles, spotted eagle rays, and calm clownfish colonies in anemones.
